Morns like these-we parted-
Noons like these-she rose-
Fluttering first-then firmer
To her fair repose.
Noons like these-she rose-
Fluttering first-then firmer
To her fair repose.
Never did she lisp it-
It was not for me-
She-was mute from transport-
I-from agony-
It was not for me-
She-was mute from transport-
I-from agony-
Till-the evening nearing
One the curtains drew-
Quick! A Sharper rustling!
And this linnet flew!
One the curtains drew-
Quick! A Sharper rustling!
And this linnet flew!
Emily Dickinson
Broken friendship between Venus and Emily
We parted at Morns-
She rose at Noon-
Shining first-then better
To her sound sleep.
She rose at Noon-
Shining first-then better
To her sound sleep.
She never told it-
It was not for me-
She was mute from joy-
I was mute from agony-
It was not for me-
She was mute from joy-
I was mute from agony-
Till the evening neared
Someone closed the curtains-
Early! A Sharp rustling!
And this linnet flew!
Someone closed the curtains-
Early! A Sharp rustling!
And this linnet flew!
Emily’s favorite planet Venus is observed at dawn and evening. They enjoyed rendezvous every day. But someone closed the curtains earlier than usual, Venus mistook it a sign of breaking off friendship with Emily. “linnet” may be Venus’ pet name.
